James Harden played for the Philadelphia 76ers last season after moving from the Nets after a year and had the option as a free agent to resign with the 76ers or move on to another NBA franchise.
The 10-time All Star decided that he would stay on with the 76ers.
The 76ers and Harden have now signed a new contract that will see Harden stay with the 76ers for the next 2 years. The two year contract is estimated to be around $68.6 million which guarantees that he will get $33 million this season.
Harden had earlier reunited with his former Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey and they worked out an agreement with the Philadelphia 76ers that will allow Harden to forfeit his remaining $35.6 million for the next season and take up free agency again for the 2023-2024 season.
Fans of the Philadelphia 76ers will be happy to see Harden retained even though he did not perform as well as they would have liked last season. The 76ers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs which also made it the fourth time in five years!
Harden who turns 33 in August has been named six times to the first team as an All NBA guard and has a stellar resume. One thing that he does not have on his resume and dearly wants is an NBA Championship.
James Harden has played in the NBA Championship finals on four occasions – twice with the Houston Rockets and twice with the Oklahoma City Thunder but his teams have fallen short on all four occasions. Harden is keen on taking the 76ers to the NBA Championship finals this season and knows that he needs more support from his teammates.
Harden decided not to take the $47.4 million player option for the next season and accept a pay cut so that the 76ers will have a bigger budget to strengthen the squad. The 76ers have taken advantage of this and have now signed multiple free agents which include Danuel House and P.J. Tucker. The 76ers have also carried out a trade with Memphis and signed De’Anthony Melton.
