The cricket world lost a legend in March 2022 when shocking news broke that legendary Aussie spin bowler Shane Warne had passed away in Thailand from cardiac arrest. Warne was just 52 and was still actively involved in cricket as a commentator and mentor for T20 leagues.
Shane Warne was a proud Victorian and his favorite ground in the world was his home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Cricket Australia has announced that it plans to honour Warne during the Boxing Day test which starts after Christmas.
Australia will take on South African in the second test of the three match test series at the MCG. The Boxing Day test takes place every year at the MCG and when Warne played test cricket, he was the star of a number of Boxing Day test matches. He ended up taking his 700th wicket at the MCG in 2010 and also a hat trick in 1994.
Cricket Australia will paint Warne’s test cap number (350) on the square of the wicket for the entire test. A graphic of Shane Warne will be displayed at 3.50 pm on Boxing Day on all screens across the MCG while during intervals, highlight reels of Shane Warne will be played on the screens as well on betting apps.
Cricket Australia said it was only fitting that they mourn his passing on the very first Boxing Day test after his death. Warne was also honoured last week at the MCG by his former BBL team, the Melbourne Stars.
Warne was known for painting his face with zinc cream ready for war. He also preferred to wear a floppy hat instead of the famous baggy green. Australia and South African players at the MCG are set to wear a flopping hat while the national anthems of both countries are played. Cricket Australia has encouraged fans to wear zinc cream during the test to show their support for Shane Warne.
Australia are currently 1-0 up in the 3 match series after winning the first test at the Gabba in Brisbane, get all the latest betting odds right here.
