The Cincinnati Reds have fired longtime manager David Bell after their latest 2-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 52-year-old’s time with the baseball team has come to an end after six seasons and one playoff appearance.

“We Felt a Change Was Needed”

The Cincinnati Reds’s president of baseball operations, Nick Krall, commented on the decision, explaining they

felt a change was needed to move the Major League team forward

Krall added the now ex-manager “provided the kind of steadiness” that the team needed in their clubhouse over the past few seasons.

However, the manager who was hired ahead of the 2019 campaign, was not able to achieve the expected success, hence forcing the franchise to “begin focusing on 2025”.

The only time Bell managed to carry the Reds into the playoffs was during the short COVID-19 season in 2020.

Nonetheless, the team was knocked out in the wild-card round that same year. That marked the only postseason berth that the Reds witnessed in over a decade.

Bell marked the end of his first head job in MLB with a 409-455 career record, finishing over .500 twice.

His best campaign was the 83-79 finish in 2021, when the team missed the MLB playoffs.

Bench Coach Benavides Named Interim Manager

The Reds have appointed bench coach and former Major League Baseball infielder Freddie Benavides as interim manager.

He will be responsible for managing the team during their last five games of the regular season.

Krall has announced his intention to address the media on Monday at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds will once again miss the playoffs for the fourth year in a row, marking Bell’s fifth time missing the postseason games in all six seasons spent with the team.

Currently, the franchise 76-81 and ranked fourth in the NL Central and 13.5 games back from the Milwaukee Brewers, who clinched last week’s division.

Next in line for the Cincinnati Reds is the wrap-up of the regular season with the upcoming two-game series against the Cleveland Guardians and the three-game run against the Chicago Cubs scheduled for this week.
