The traditional New Year’s test will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Jan 7 even as New South Wales (NSW) battles another COVID-19 outbreak. The SCG was set to welcome 25,000 fans for the first test match of 2021 between Australia and India but fans could be banned completely if the outbreak worsens in the lead up to the test.
This is going to be a really important test for both sides as the four match test series is currently tied at 1-1.
Australia won the first test comfortably at the Adelaide Oval but India bounced back really well at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to tie the series.

India goes into the SCG test as underdogs with odds of 3/1 while Australia continues to be the favorites with odds of 8/13. Given the fact that the last two tests that India played at the SCG ended in a draw, the betting odds for a draw are currently at 10/3.
India don’t mind the betting underdog status as it puts the pressure on the home side. We take a look at the pros and cons of each team in the lead up to the SCG test.
India is coming off a great test win and will have the momentum with them. They will also be bolstered with the rest of the experienced Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. Since the SCG is the most spin friendly wicket in Australia, India should have an upper hand in this department as they have Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
The biggest worries for India are at the top of the order as Rohit Sharma has had no match practice in Australia. They will also field an in-experienced seam attack due to injuries.
Australia last test match loss at the SCG was back in 2011 against England. The Aussies are expected to play the experienced David Warner who will return to the top of the order. Australia doesn’t have any injury problems in the bowling department and will play to full strength.
The big concern for Australia is their openers. Australia might play Matthew Wade or drop him and debut Will Pucovski. The lack of runs from Steve Smith in the last two games is also a concern as he has fallen to R Ashwin repeatedly.
We would put our money on India to win at the SCG.
