Summary
- Asia Cup 2023 will take place from 31 Aug to 17 Sep
- BCCI set to name 18 member squad by the end of Aug 20
- Multiple players under selector’s scanner ahead of 2023 ODI World Cup
The cricket world will turn their attention to the Asia Cup 2023 which is set to take place from 31 Aug to 17 Sep. The tournament will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan and a total of 6 Asian teams will take part. The teams are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal.
A number of countries have already released their squad for the Asia Cup but India have opted to delay their squad announcement. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to finalize their squad and make it public before Aug 20.
The BCCI Selection Committee which is led by former player Ajit Agarkar are expected to name an 18 member squad and then cut this down to 15 players for the 2023 ODI World Cup which runs from Oct 5 to Nov 19 in India.
One of the main reasons why the BCCI Selection Committee has delayed naming their squad is because they are waiting on the fitness of a couple of key players. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer who are key players in the middle-order are recovering from injuries and are likely to take a fitness test on Aug 18.
If they pass the fitness test, the selectors are likely to name both players for the Asia Cup. Unconfirmed reports suggested that both players were around 80 percent fit last week and are pushing hard at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to regain full match fitness.
The good news for Indian fans is that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is fit and ready to return to action at the Asia Cup.
If KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are not fit, some of the other players that can get a chance include the likes of Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. The selectors will be keeping a close watch on the performance of a bunch of players who could be fighting for their spot in the World Cup squad.
