The Dallas Cowboys are seeking a replacement for head coach Jason Garrett who has not had his contract renewed.
The Cowboys will focus their search efforts on potential head coaches with strong resumes and proven success in the NFL.
The Cowboys have so far met with former Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy as potential replacements for Garrett—eschewing highly touted NFL coordinators looking to step up, as well as popular, decorated college coaches who may be ready for the challenges ahead. Some of these candidates include Florida’s Dan Mullen, Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley and Baylor’s Matt Rhule.
The Cowboys made it clear that they did not offer an extension to Garrett’s contract which is due to expire next week. League insiders state that this is because Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner, wishes to finalize a new head coach sooner rather than later.
Garrett compiled an 85-67 record as the head coach for the Cowboys, and reached the playoffs three times where his teams generally faltered. He has won only two playoff games; one of his biggest failures was not being able to lead the Cowboys out of the divisional round despite holding the top seed in the NFC in 2016.

One potential candidate confirmed by a source within the Cowboys is former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, who led his team to Super Bowl XXXIV, holding a record of 173-165-1 for the regular season, and 5-6 in the playoffs. Fisher is considered to be a favourite of Jones as well as team vice-president Stephen Jones. Fisher has had a three-year break from coaching after being released by the Los Angeles Rams in 2016.
In comparison, Mike McCarthy coached the Packers until 2018, spending 13 seasons with the team and compiling a record of 125-77-2 for the regular season, and 10-8 in the playoffs, including a Super Bowl XLV win in 2010.
Marvin Lewis coached the Bengals until 2019, for a total of 16 seasons, with a record of 131-122-3 for the regular season, and has a 0-7 record in the playoffs. Lewis was released by the team after compiling a dismal 2-14 record in 2019. In addition to Lewis’ head coach experience, he was also the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens during the 2000 Super Bowl championship run.
