Josh Allen scores a touchdown against the Detroit Lions during NFL season 2024Summary:

  • The Buffalo Bills (11-3) outlasted the Detroit Lions (12-2) in a high-scoring Week 15 clash, winning 48-42.
  • The Lions’ 11-game win streak was halted amid a wave of injuries.
  • Key Lions players injured included Carlton Davis III (jaw), Khalil Dorsey (ankle), and Alim McNeill (knee).

For Detroit Lions NFL fans, hope is something they’ve held onto for decades, and this season has delivered in ways few thought possible.

The team has been a revelation, blending skill, creativity, and relentless offensive firepower. For once, mentioning “Detroit” and “Super Bowl” in the same breath didn’t feel like a punchline.

Their 11-game win streak propelled them to a 12-1 record just ahead of Week 15. However, Sunday’s clash against the Buffalo Bills ended in a painful 48-42 loss.

It was more than just a loss on the scoreboard, as the injury cart became an unwelcome but frequent sight, taking away player after player.

The Fragile Defense Crumbled

Cornerback Carlton Davis III (27) exited early with a jaw injury, never returning. Shortly after, cornerback Khalil Dorsey (26) suffered a brutal ankle injury and was carted off.

Defensive lineman Alim McNeill (24), who had just recovered from a concussion, limped off with a knee injury.

Head coach Dan Campbell had more bad news to announce.

I don’t feel good about either of those guys [Dorsey and McNeill], Normally, if I’m saying ‘not good’ it’s not good for the rest of the year

Despite watching the already fragile defense crumble even further, Campbell refused to blame it on the injuries.

Campbell: “I Didn’t Have Them Ready.”

No, I’m not buying it, We can be better. We should have been better. We know how good they are, but we should have been more urgent.

Campbell’s philosophy is clear: injuries are part of the game, and every player must be ready to step up.

I just feel like we didn’t play at the same level as that team, That’s why I put this on me. I didn’t have them ready.

Still, the numbers don’t lie. The Lions’ injured reserve list is packed with key defensive players: Aidan Hutchinson (leg), Mekhi Wingo (knee), Malcolm Rodriguez (ACL), and more.

With 15 defenders sidelined, it’s no surprise Buffalo racked up 498 yards. Josh Allen alone accounted for 362 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus 68 rushing yards and two more scores.

Desperation struck when Campbell called for an onside, aggressive kick with 12 minutes left, trailing by 10.

The decision, considered reckless by some, backfired, leading to a Bills touchdown.

I thought we’d get possession, Obviously, hindsight… yeah, I wish I hadn’t done that.

Nonetheless, despite the setbacks, the Lions’ offense put up a hard fight. Jared Goff’s 494-yard, five-touchdown performance kept them alive and kicking until the very end.

However, as the injuries pile up, the question of how much more can this team endure continues to linger.

Campbell is convinced they will “bounce back and go to Chicago.” The Super Bowl dream is not completely dead just yet, despite the window narrowing more and more.
