Earlier in the week, Kansas City Chiefs coach, Andy Reid, conveyed a moving message regarding the fresh shooting tragedy that took place during the celebratory Super Bowl parade two weeks ago.
While wrapping up a chat at the NFL scouting combine, Reid emphasized “We’ve got to do whatever we can to help our youth”
Like many others, Reid was shaken by the senseless tragedy that happened at the end of the parade that took place at Kansas City’s Union Station, when 43-year-old Lisa Lopez-Galvan, wife and mother of two, was shot dead and 22 others suffered injuries.
Dominic M. Miller and Lyndell Mays are now facing second-degree murder charges and other charges. Two juveniles who have remained unidentified were also charged with gun possession and resisting arrest.
The coach opened the press conference by expressing condolences for the family of Lopez-Galvan, who was a passionate Chiefs fan and a DJ who hosted the “Taste of Tejano” for KKFI-FM.
Before discussing any football matters, Reid chose to show respect to the victim while taking his time to send a powerful message to the youth of America.
“You’re our future”, he said, “and as great as we can make this place, we want to do that”.
He spoke about the need to turn a negative “into a real positive” using “a little togetherness and love”.
The team, together with the NFL, have announced they would make a donation of $200,000 for the creation of an “emergency fund with the United Way.
The money would be used to help the victims of the shooting incident.
Chiefs president Mark Donovan is also working on a series of projects that would better showcase Reid’s intention to support the troubled youth in the nation.
Reid has also pointed to connections with city leaders and the support from the team’s owner Clark Hunt.
