“A Bar of Their Own” is the name of the first-ever sports bar entirely dedicated to women athletes and women’s sports.
The name was inspired by “A League of Their Own”, the iconic 1992 movie starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis focused on the first all-women’s < ahref="https://www.top10sportsbettingsites.net/top-10-baseball-betting-sites">baseball league in the US.
On top of the inspiration for the name, the movie also helped owner Jillian Hiscock choose the right themes for the design of her new bar so that they would perfectly match its mission: to break into the still untapped market for women’s sports.
The bar, whose walls are covered in memorabilia featuring Pro Volleyball Federation matches, Women’s college basketball, and other female sporting events, officially opened its gates to an unexpectedly large and enthusiastic crowd on March 1.
Speaking to KMSP Fox 9, Hiscock explained that while they “were expecting it to be busy”, the tremendous success the grand opening recorded had exceeded “any expectations” she may have had.
Even patrons who had an idea of what to expect while setting foot into the new location were baffled by the bar’s amazing commitment to women’s sports.
“When I walked in, I was super overwhelmed”, said one of the patrons, adding they had wanted a “space like this for so long”.
Lynette Sjoquist, who traveled the country playing for the All-American Red Heads, the pioneer professional women’s basketball team, believes a bar with an exclusive focus on women’s sports is an idea whose time has finally come.
Hiscock is well-known in the local community for being a powerful advocate for women’s rights as well as a sports aficionado, beer nerd, and season ticket holder for the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Minnesota Lynx as well as the Minnesota Gophers softball team.
After attending a sports bar that had failed miserably at catering to women’s sports a year ago, she decided it was time to change things around.
While she knew her idea would break new ground, she was still confident in its success.
“I think people have been ready for this and waiting for this for a really long time”, she added.
