India console New Zealand after defeating them in 2nd ODI of New Zealand's Tour of India 2023Summary

  • New Zealand lost the third ODI against India by 90 runs
  • The Kiwis suffered an embarrassing 3-0 ODI series whitewash
  • Shubman Gill stars and wins player of the series award

New Zealand went into the third and final ODI against India knowing they need to win to salvage some pride after losing the first two ODI’s and conceding the cricket series. The Kiwis lost the first ODI by 12 runs and the second by 8 wickets.

Kiwis Will Be Embarrassed With ODI Performance

It is always tough for any team to beat India at home in any format of the game. However, fans expected the ODI series to be a lot more competitive than it turned out to be. New Zealand put up a good performance in the first ODI but then got completely derailed in the second and third ODI as their performance with both bat and ball got worse.

The Kiwis were bowled out for just 108 in their second ODI which exposed how brittle their middle-order is when Kane Williamson isn’t in the side to anchor the innings. Their bowling let them down in the third ODI as the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put on a 212 opening partnership as both openers went on to score centuries.

Devon Conway led the fight and scored a fighting 138 from 100 balls but did not get enough support from the rest of the batsmen. New Zealand captain Tom Latham tried to look at the positives and said that this ODI series was helpful as it helped with their preparation for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The ICC World Cup is set to take place in India during October and November 2023.

India Ranked Number 1 On ICC ODI Rankings

India on the other hand will be very pleased with their performance as they outclassed the Kiwis with both bat and ball. The most impressive takeaway from this series was the form and class of Shubman Gill as an opener.

Gill scored a magnificent double century in the first ODI, hitting 208 from 149 balls, he remained unbeaten on 40 in the second ODI and finished with 112 in the third ODI. He scored a total of 360 runs in the series which earned him the player of the series award.

India are currently ranked number one on the ICC ODI rankings and played like the number one side in the world against New Zealand.
