Summary:
- ICC and BCCI release 2023 World Cup schedule
- India set to take on Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Oct 15
- PCB says Government must give approval for them to play India
The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took a long time to publish the full schedule for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup which will take place in India.
They released the full schedule on 27 June and there are a few surprises.
The 2023 World Cup will take place from 5 Oct to Nov 19 across 10 different venues with the World Cup starting in Ahmedabad and concluding with the final also in Ahmedabad. The 10 locations that will host a total of 45 league matches are Ahmedabad, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Dharamsala, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Lucknow.
The timing of the 2023 World Cup is interesting as this is typically when the monsoon sets in and rain could play a factor in a few games. However, the ICC and the BCCI did not have a lot of room to work with the IPL taking place in the summer months.
Most of these games will be D/N fixtures with only 6 out of the 45 games taking place in the day. There are no reserve days for league games with only the semi-finals and final having a reserve day.
The schedule will see India start their campaign against Afghanistan on Oct 11 in Delhi and then they prepare to face arch-rivals Pakistan on Oct 15 in Ahmedabad.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has released a statement regarding the India vs. Pakistan game on Oct 15 and said that it will take place only if the government of Pakistan gave its approval. The PCB said it had informed the ICC of this stance before the schedule was released and has already been in touch with the government of Pakistan to seek approval.
The PCB will update the ICC once it gets confirmation from the government of Pakistan.
The ICC has also stated that if India reaches the semi-finals, it will take place in Mumbai but if India have to face Pakistan in the semi’s, then the semi-final will not take place in Mumbai but will be changed to Kolkata.
