Serena Williams who will turn 38 on September 26 showed her class in her semi-final match against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina who she took down in straight sets winning 6-3, 6-1 to book herself a place in yet another US Open Championship final.
There is no doubt that Serena Williams will go down in the record books as one of the greatest tennis players on the women’s circuit.
She has an opportunity on Saturday night to win her 24th Grand Slam and tie the record with Margret Court for the most number of grand slams.
Williams has done well at Flushing Meadows in the past and a win on Saturday night will give her a 7th US Open championship and establish her as the best women’s tennis player in the history of the game. Serena Williams who is the 8th seed at the 2019 US Open has overcome a lot of adversity in the last couple of years and has defied the odds repeatedly to show that she still has it in her to be the best player in the world.
US Open Tennis Championships
The US Open final is also another opportunity for Serena Williams to erase her horrific meltdown in the 2018 US Open final where she lost her cool and had a heated argument with the match referee and eventually ended up losing the final. Williams will want to erase those memories and leave center court with her hands up in the air and the US Open championship in her hands.
Williams will go in as the favourite as she takes on 19 year old Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu who defeated Belinda Bencic in the other semi-final 7-6, 7-5. B Andreescu is the 15th seed and knows that she will need to play phenomenally well if she is going to stand any chance of pulling off an upset win against Serena Williams.
The biggest challenge for both players is going to be the pressure of playing in the US Open final. Bianca Andreescu is playing her first US Open final and will be nervous for sure but in reality she has nothing to lose.
Williams has done it multiple times but this time around she has to deal with the pressure of tying Margret Court’s record, winning her 7th US Open and erasing the bad memories of the 2018 US Open final.
