Summary
- Danushka Gunathilaka is accused of alleged sheathing in his rape charges
- Australian media get access to how the alleged rape took place
- Sri Lankan Cricket sports minister issues apology to victim and Australian government
When news broke that Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested in Sydney on alleged rape charges, there was very little information given to the press as the prosecution wanted a closed hearing. What we did know was that Gunathilaka was accused of raping an unidentified Aussie woman in her house and was refused bail.
Now more details have emerged after local media appealed and challenged the suppression order.
Gunathilaka contacted the woman on Tinder on Oct 29 and shifted the conversation to Whatsapp and Instagram. They started having video calls to get to know each other and initially Gunathilaka wanted to meet her in Brisbane. The woman preferred to meet up in Sydney and met Gunathilaka on Nov 2 at the Opera Bar at Circular Quay at 8.20 pm.
Gunathilaka is reported to have had 2 drinks at the bar while the woman had 5. They went to Frankie’s Pizza for dinner before catching a ferry to go to the woman’s house. The court documents claim that the cricket star pressed himself to the woman and kissed her forcibly while waiting for the ferry and later did it again on the ferry and slapped her bottom which drew out an ‘oi’ from her.
Once they reached the woman’s place, Gunathilaka was aggressive and tried to get on top of the woman forcefully while groping her breast. The woman asked him to slow down but he did not. She agreed to have sexual intercourse with him even though she was uncomfortable and asked him to wear a condom.
Gunathilaka agreed to wear a condom but in the end tricked her (sheathing) and had unprotected sex which the woman discovered when she saw the condom at the side of the bed unused. The court documents also claim that he choked her multiple times. She ordered him an Uber to get back to his hotel at 1 am and filed a complaint the next day.
Roshan Ranasinghe, the Sri Lankan Sports Minister has issued an apology to the International Cricket Council (ICC), Australian government who are hosting the T20 World Cup at the moment and the alleged victim on behalf of Sri Lanka and its people and said that they would take remedial action!
