The National Football League (NFL) announced its 2022 regular-season schedule featuring five international games.
According to the schedule, two initial games will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on consecutive weekends in October. Todd Kline, CCO at Tottenham Hotspur, extended a warm welcome to all the teams which will play at the stadium.
Referring to Tottenham’s successful record in hosting teams in 2019 and 2021, Kline called the stadium the true home of the NFL in Britain. The executive mentioned that due to the suspension of travel restrictions and the league’s growing popularity, Tottenham was looking towards a large inflow of foreign football fans.
The first purpose-built NFL stadium located outside of the U.S., Tottenham boasts of an artificial field, officers, locker rooms, and cheerleaders, as well as media, broadcast, and medical amenities. Having hosted two games each year on average during its decade-long partnership with the NFL, Tottenham will host the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints on 2 October, 2.30 P.M. ET. The second match will be between the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers on 9 October, 2.30 P.M. ET.
Known as bitter rivals, the Saints and the Vikings will play for the first time in Tottenham Hotspur, even though both teams had played before in Britain on separate occasions. The Saints are a controversial lot, exposed in the Bountygate Scandal of 2011 for injuring opposition teams for money.
The Giants will play for the third time in London after 2007 and 2016. Their maiden game at Tottenham will be against three-time NFC North champions, the Packers, who will be the 32nd NFL team to play in Britain since 2007, in what will be their first international trip. The Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks will also participate this season.
The total NFL games in London have increased from the last season due to the league’s overseas program under which every team will play abroad until 2028. Apart from London, German cities such as Frankfurt and Munich will host regular-season matches in the future. Mexico City is another foreign location for this season. However, the details are yet to be released.
Big names like the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers and Buccaneers’ Tom Brady, Mike Evans, Leonard Fournette and Chris Godwin will be a part of NFL 2022.
