Roger Federer will look to make history at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships which start on July 1 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Federer who will turn 38 in August has already won eight Wimbledon Championships over the course of his career.
Should he win the 2019 Wimbledon men’s singles championship, he will go down in the history books as the oldest player to win a Wimbledon championship.
The Swiss great had a good run at the 2019 French Open and made it to the semi-finals where he lost to long-time rival Rafael Nadal who went on to win the French Open. The fact that Federer played on clay which is his least favourite surface and did so well shows that he is still at the top of his game.
The lawn courts of Wimbledon have always been special to Roger Federer and his record at Wimbledon speaks for itself. This is why the All England Lawn Tennis Club committee decided to promote Federer and make him the number 2 seed at Wimbledon even though he is currently ranked in 3rd place on the ATP rankings.
Novak Djokovic is ranked the number one seed and behind Federer is Rafael Nadal as the number three seed. This does not come entirely as a surprise as to tennis fans as the three of them have dominated world tennis for a number of years. However, this could very well be the last time fans get to see Roger Federer play at Wimbledon and he will no doubt be the crowd favourite.
While many expect the top three to win at Wimbledon, there are a few threats from the outside and they come in the form of last year’s runner-up Kevin Anderson who is seeded 4, French Open finalist Dominic Thiem who is seeded 5 and Federer’s Swiss teammate Stan Wawrinka who is seeded 22.
While there were no surprises in picking the top 3 seeds for the men’s singles at Wimbledon, the women’s division continues to remain open as no one has really dominated in 2019. Aussie Ashleigh Barty is ranked as the number 1 seed and Japanese player Naomi Osaka is the number 2 seed.
The defending champion Angelique Kerber is seeded number 5 while Serena Williams who finished as the runner-up at the 2018 Wimbledon Championship is the number 11 seed.
