The Golden State Warriors have made it to the last five consecutive NBA finals and won three of those finals to establish themselves as the team to beat. They have entered the last few seasons as the betting favourite but that will not be the case for the upcoming season which starts on October 4.
One of the key reasons why the Warriors have been so dominant is because they have had a great core team which they have successfully kept together season after season. This season, the Warriors will have a new look as a number of their key players are gone.
All Star Kevin Durant who played phenomenally well with the Warriors left the franchise and joined the Brooklyn Nets. Shaun Livingston who played for years with the Warriors decided to call it a day and retire from the NBA. Veteran Andre Iguodala also decided to move on from the Warriors and is now part of the Memphis Grizzlies. DeMarcus Cousins who played for the Warriors last season has also moved on and joined the LA Lakers.
The three players who remain with the Warriors are Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. However, the Warriors will have to play the first half of the season without the services of Klay Thompson who injured himself during the NBA finals against the Toronto Raptors and tore his ACL.
Thompson is out indefinitely for now and those close to him suggest that he will most likely take the court after the NBA All Star Game in 2020, provided his recovery goes as per plan.
A number of NBA analysts believe that the Warriors will struggle to exert the dominance they have over the past 5 seasons because they have new faces in the team and it will take time for them to find their feet and gel as a team. The Warriors will rely on the experience of head coach Steve Kerr and the leadership of Steph Curry to get them going in the right direction during the first half of the season.
